As a tutor, I like to begin by assessing my students' knowledge of the topic at hand. Then, I help students build a solid foundation of fundamentals. After ensuring the student is proficient in the basics, we can move on to discussing more complex topics. A great technique I teach to my students for solving complicated problems is how to break the problem down into smaller chunks, trace them back to the fundamental concepts and start solving the big problem by solving each sub-problem.
